Jaliyah finds herself in the middle of Alisha’s ex-boyfriend drama. The girls forget their troubles with a few beers.
This episode neatly segues from the introduction of the main characters, their friends, and their romantic issues, to building a relationship between the new roommates, Alisha and Jaliyah. It uses the tried and trusted ‘bonding over alcohol’ strategy and provides each of the roommates with the cliff notes version of the other’s life, which will help integrate them into each other’s storyline.
The scene where Craig realises that Jaliyah is gay and worries that she might ‘turn’ his ex-girlfriend is handled well. He comes across as jealous and a little slow on the uptake, rather than actually bigoted, but Alisha’s brother, Darryl, is still there to call him on his homophobia. These two characters, and actors, work well together and I came out of the scene still liking Craig and with a new fondness for Darryl.
The only relationship – family, friend or lover – than I’m not really feeling at the moment is that between Jaliyah and Rocky; possibly, because all their interactions over the last two episodes have been via phone or Skype. It left the episode feeling slightly uneven, as the Alisha side worked so well, although Jen’s exuberant entrance did go some way to rebalancing the situation.
Another good episode. My one complaint, and it’s not about the series itself, is the lack of clear information about when new episodes air.
