After suffering breakups, a stoic lesbian moves in with a perky straight woman. With nothing in common beyond mutual heartache, the two form an unlikely bond as conflicts with their significant others force them closer.
One of my main complaints when it comes to web series has always been the brevity of episodes. Sometimes, you’re lucky to get three minutes of actual story time, which means it’s three or four episodes before you even start to get to know the characters, but not so with Entangled with You. With a run-time of just over fifteen minutes, the first episode gives you time to actually get to know the main characters – Alisha (Kathryn J. Taylor) and Jaliyah (Loren Lillian) – and the issues they face with their significant others.
Often, in television, when you have a straight and lesbian character going through a relationship issue, their problems will be parallels of each other, but this time around they’re almost opposites. Alisha is quick to welcome the idea of a commitment from her boyfriend, whereas Jaliyah is struggling to keep her independence without alienating her girlfriend. Needless to say, neither gets what they want, but whereas one relationship ends with a screaming row, the other is a more bittersweet parting of the ways, although neither felt as if we’d seen the last of the exes, and that’s a good thing.
I actually found myself liking both the exes, which was another plus, as I could see why Alisha and Jaliyah would have fallen for them. Too often ex-partners are displayed as raving bitches or boorish arse-holes and you’re left wondering what is wrong with the protagonists that they would have chosen such people. Here, despite thinking that ‘he should learn to keep it in his pants’, that isn’t a problem. It’s too early to say if I’ll be rooting for the two couples to get back together but I am looking forward to seeing more of them.
Good performances and a welcome injection of humour – especially from Craig – rounded out a very promising opening episode and guaranteed that I’ll be tuning in on the 29th to watch the second.
Entangled with You was created by Caryn K. Hayes – the creator of Breaking Point and a very welcome guest at last year’s FemSlashCon – and is available to watch on the Entangled with You web site and HardlyWorkingTV‘s YouTube channel.
