Kiss Her I’m Famous Episode 3
Warning – some spoilers and candid thoughts ahead in our recapaview for episode 3
Episode 3 – recapaview
Somehow I know Andy Warhol is laughing madly and saying, “15 minutes of fame suckers, told’ya all everyone wants theirs…” Ok, maybe not, but it seems like we are on this slippery slope of viral Internet memes gone wild. Oh, did I mention everyone seems to have loss their sense of, well, sense, except Mandy (although Jen is working on that, slowly chipping it away, piece by piece).
We begin this episode with the reveal that Jen’s Josh is linked to the french scandal babe, who is linked to a senator and all three are being profiled on this very odd entertainment talk show (got that? There will be a quiz at the end of the episode. OK who’s going to make an “Alice Chart” for all of these connections?). Furious, livid and determined to get back, Jen pulls out paper and pen to begin constructing a plan. After a slight misunderstand (there is the techie hack and the machete hack, always make sure boys and girls to know which one your friend is proposing), Jen hits upon the perfect plan, fight fire with fire, make their own sex tape (it seems Jen has forgotten that playing with fire usually means you get burned).
But the train is now in motion, the steam is building and no one can stop runaway Jen. She will direct, Mandy will star, Josh and Hannah will see what they lost and Jupiter will align with Mars (ok maybe I should not be listening to the Broadway soundtrack for “Hair” when writing recapviews). Speaking of music, this episode features a nice music montage as Jen sets her plan in motion posting flyers around town, cut with brief clips of Mandy trying to “prepare” and do “research” (for fun check out some of the montages listed in this article number 6 is my favorite). I do like montages especially if they have good music backing them and this montage does. I’ve been meaning to speak to the music. I’ve included a picture with the music listed from the end credits. I recommend you visit the three musician sites listed. I love SoundCloud and was very happy to see all three using SoundCloud. I like how the music flows in the episodes and the use of a disco sounding song for the montage just fits for so many reasons.
The way they come out of the montage (oh I made an unintentional pun) had me laughing hard enough I had to pause the show (I forever will have this image of a large white mushroom blob thing making sexy sounds, please do not ask, just go watch). Although, it is again a great storytelling nod to how well the writer understands these characters as Mandy is in her house, and was all alone (until Jen came in) and had to be under a heavy blanket to do her research. It seems Hannah may have been right and Mandy is not very sure of herself or adventurous.
The episode ends with a sweet touch as Jen chips a few more pieces from Mandy’s self-conscious reserve. And there is this odd question I just have to ask, in one clip from the montage, Jen is putting up a poster and it comes undone and flies off toward her. Was that somehow staged, or just a happy accident that they managed to incorporate, successfully, into the episode.

……………………………………………………………………………
The world has gone mad! According to Joe, the male half of the entertainment TV presenting duo, the furball otherwise known as Josh has been offered a TV deal based on his memoirs. Tracy, the other presenter, is baffled about how Josh would have the time considering he has all the hunker, hunker good stuff going on (poor Tracy’s mind has obviously been addled by the concept of someone whose only accomplishment was having a nude photo leaked to the press writing his memoirs).
Jen, on the other hand, is too pissed off to even consider the literary merits of the furball’s memoirs – although not too annoyed that she can’t worry about her delivery – and is determined to come up with the perfect plan to get back at him. Her first suggestion – we’ll hack the shit out of them – is met with mild disapproval by Mandy, who assumes Jen is talking chainsaws and body parts, a la Dexter, but when Jen clarifies that she’s talking computer-hacking, Mandy goes ape-shit and stomps all over the idea. Thus proving that it really is the quiet ones and although Jen may look like the crazy one in this relationship, looks can be deceptive.
Jen’s second idea is both lame and impractical, while her syphilis suggestion is met with horror, and Mandy’s insistence that they’ve lost: Hannah is never gonna find me sexy enough, nobody really is (aw, sweetie, don’t say such things) and Josh, Josh is a big time director now, he’s moved on completely. We lost, they won… we can’t do a damn thing about it.
Luckily, Jen is not deterred, and laying her head upon a pile of trashy magazines, she’s hit with inspiration: A sex tape. We’re gonna make a sex tape.
As crazy as it sounds, the idea does actually have some merit, as it has not only the potential to beat Josh at his own game, but also show Hannah just how adventurous Mandy can be. Score one for Jen and her crazy ideas.
Mandy isn’t quite with the program, although she does perk up at the idea of getting her own back on Hannah, but like most people outside Hollywood she’s a little leery of the idea of getting naked and super-friendly in front of a camera. Fear of what her mother and co-workers would think falls to the wayside as she asks: Do you really think I can be beautiful? In a tone that had me going ‘aww’ and smiling at Jen’s unequivocal, more than anything in the world.
And now I’m shipping them, which means I’m hooked… Well done, guys.
Jen papers the city with Sex Tape Audition flyers while Mandy does some under the covers research – no, not that – in preparation for her role. Later, over a glass of wine, Jen tries to assuage Mandy’s nerves by telling her how she used to have a crush on her in high school, but Mandy quickly changes the subject, although not before sparking an ‘ah-ha’ moment in my newly minted shipper’s mind.
It turns out that Jen forgot to include a contact number at the bottom of the flyer, so they’re back to square one, sex-tape-auditions wise and we’re at the end of another episode.
For me, this episode is where the story really starts to come together, not just in terms of plot but also character. Yes, Mandy is the shy one, but she’s more than that, ditto with the not-so-crazy Jen. Looking forward to more.
